SALMON CART THURSDAYS InSeason Catering will be grilling salmon at the salmon cart on the water side of the store on Thursdays 11am-7pm through the summer.

NATURAL FOODS CLASSES Take this 6-session Natural Foods course to learn about the health benefits of whole foods. Each 2-hour class stands alone--feel free to attend one or all. Co-op Class: Herbal Syrup Making When: September 1, 5-8pm Where: Co-op Annex (2432 Washington, across from Yacht Club) Learn how to make herbal syrups with local herbalist and owner of Mountain Spirit Herbs Denise Joy. Class limited to 8; call 385-2831, ext. 208 to reserve space. $40 for Food Co-op members, $50 for non-members.
Care and Eating of Local Mushrooms When: September 1, 7:30pm Where: Quimper Grange (1219 Corona Street, at the end of Sheridan) David Weitzman, Olympic Peninsula Mycological Society member, will introduce beginners to local edible mushrooms such as Chanterelles, Lobster Mushrooms, Shaggy Manes, Parasol Mushrooms and Boletes and the types of habitat and conditions where they may be found. He’ll cover techniques of picking mushrooms and best ways of handling them on the trail. Attendees will learn how to cook as well as how to preserve mushrooms. He’ll show slides, distribute recipes and bring samples of preserved mushrooms. The program starts at 7:30 pm and is preceded by a potluck dessert/fingerfood social half-hour from 7pm to 7:30pm. Emergency Preparedness (EP) Special Ordering When: September 1-22 Where: The Food Co-op Food Co-op Member-owners can special order from the UNFI Buyers Club catalog (not from other vendors, with the exception of Glorybee, for ordering food storage buckets, 1-5 gallon sizes) with no minimum and no mark-up. A good time to stock up on bulk and canned foods. As part of EP-Emergency Preparedness, free custom-labeling for bulk containers will be available 10am-noon September 8, 9, 15 & 16.

Jefferson County Public Works Solid Waste Division, partnered with Local 20/20’s Food Resiliency Action Group, is offering free compost-making workshops. Workshops led by local organic farmer Sebastian Aguilar. Workshops begin at noon and last approximately 4 hours. Please dress for the weather and bring any food and drink you may need. When & Where: September 29 - Greenbank Farm, Whidbey Island Learn to grow seed, steward heirlooms, and create new varieties at this class for Pacific Northwest gardeners and farmers. Whether you’ve saved seed before or are a beginner, this is a great chance to learn about seed and connect with other seed savers in your region. Basic seed concepts including planting, ideal population sizes, preventing cross-pollination, selecting for improved varieties, seed maturation and harvest, and seed cleaning techniques will be covered. Film Presentation: Home When: October 3, 12pm Where: The Rose Theatre Free for Food Co-op members. Home was premiered in L.A. on 2009 and depicts both the beauty of the planet and describes the scope of the damage done by human activity. A panel discussion afterwards will discuss climate change issues as well as The Food Co-op's new carbon offsets program. Come to the film and think about how our community can participate in the 350.org 10.10.10 Work Party global climate solutions activity.
